How to Write a Letter to the Editor

Christy Hawkins, Communications specialist with Teamsters for a Democratic Union, will discuss how to write a letter to the editor of a newspaper or magazine. The idea is to increase the chances that your letter will be published, so your message will get to a wider audience. The class will include tips on what to avoid putting in the letter, the length it should be, and keeping the letter focused on the subject.

For instance, proposed changes in Medicare is likely to be a topic in the fall elections, or at least it should be if the candidates do not spend all their time making personal attacks on their opponents. You might let the editor of your newspaper know what Medicare means to you and your family; explain how privatizing the program would divert billions of dollars away from paying for health care and toward private insurance profits; and of course, speak out for a national health care program that covers everybody.
