News Bits from MichUHCAN August 1999 Newsletter

As this newsletter goes to press, Congress is debating legislation aimed at patient's' rights in HMOs. Weaker versions only cover people who work for large companies that self-insure their plans - a small minority of those with private insurance. Republican bills also omit the right to sue an insurer for damages suffered from denial of care.

MichUHCAN members got active during the week of the Senate debate. On very short notice, about 20 people picketed at senator Spencer Abraham's office, in protest of an ad sponsored by the Business Roundtable, an organization of corporate CEOs. The TV ad featured distortions about the costs and effects of the Democrats' version of patient protection.
