In early September, representatives of statewide MichUHCAN met with Deputy Attorney General William Richards and two members of his staff. MichUHCAN members urged continued vigilance on any efforts of for-profit corporations to take over community non-profit hospitals. Mr. Richards and staff agreed to research legislation on community benefits being enacted in other states and convene another meeting with MichUHCAN when they have more information.


In August, Michigan Attorney General Jennifer Granholm filed suit against Gambro Healthcare, alleging the company holds an illegal monopoly on dialysis services in western Michigan. Gambro controls 95% - 100% of the market in the Grand Rapids and Muskegon area. In that area they charge over 360% more than what patients in competitive markets pay.
